Happy New Year! As the festive season comes to an end, the new year begins. In the spirit of new beginnings, resolutions are made, and we start to think of ways we can better ourselves.
We’ve all fallen victim to making too many resolutions to be able to keep up with. A lot of the time, this eventually results in giving up completely.
Ever joined a gym at the start of January with the best intentions of keeping it going all year round? However, life gets in the way. Five days a week becomes three days, which becomes two days, and so on. Don’t worry, we’ve all done it.
The key to making successful resolutions is to take small steps. Don’t go from no exercise at all to exercising every day of the week. Instead, start with one or two days and build your way up. This way, the only way to go is up rather than down.
Sometimes it’s hard to know where to start on the journey to becoming your best self. That’s why we’ve compiled some simple changes you can make to get on track to a healthier lifestyle.
Dry January (but not completely dry)
With the festive season comes lots of alcohol. A Christmas party here, drinks with friends there, it all starts to add up.
A lot of people hop on the bandwagon of Dry January to try and minimise the effects of the holiday season. But going cold turkey isn’t always the best way to go about it.
Why not try not completely dry January. This means instead of cutting out alcohol altogether, do it incrementally. Instead of going out every weekend, why not try every other weekend. Or instead of three or four glasses, why not cut back to one or two.
This minimises the pressure of a completely dry January and avoids going back to old habits when February begins.
Simple swaps and substitutes are also a great way to do this. Rather than sugary cocktails or high calorie larger, why not try a drink with a low-calorie mixer.
Meal prepping
Getting back to real life after the festive season can make it difficult to stay on top of healthy eating. It’s easy to pick up the phone after a long day of work and order a takeaway. However, you’ll feel much better for it if you resist and instead go for a home cooked meal. But then there’s the problem of having the effort and energy to make it.
Meal prepping is the answer to all these problems. Not only will it save you time and money, but it’ll help you to control your portion sizes.
Figuring out what to make for dinner can be a struggle in itself. However, meal prepping for the week means this is no longer an issue.
Exercise
For most of us, January is the time to start getting back on track after an unhealthy December.
A lot of us make the resolution to exercise more in the new year. But what do you do if the gym just isn’t for you?
There’s no point in a 6-month gym membership if you’re not entirely sure you’re going to use it. Well did you know that there are exercises you can do at home that are just as effective as the gym?
All you need to do is type ‘home workouts’ into YouTube and the world’s your oyster!
What’s more you’ll be given step-by-step instructions accompanied by demonstrations of each exercise. This avoids spending half of your time at the gym figuring out what to do and how to work the machines.
Or you could get yourself out on a nice scenic walk and reach your 10,000 steps. Walking the dogs or grabbing a coffee with friends while you walk is a great way to get those steps in!
Look and feel your best self
2023 is all about looking and feeling our best selves both on the inside and the outside!
It’s easy to wish you could turn back time and undo the effects of Christmas before they even began. But everyone’s in the same boat so there’s no use in being too hard on yourself.
